Information on the Abdominal and Pelvic Ultrasound

What to expect during your Abdominal and Pelvic Ultrasound

  • Procedure: During the scan, we’ll apply ultrasound gel to your abdomen. A sonographer will then use a probe to scan your organs, taking multiple images for our consultant radiologist to analyse.
  • Transvaginal Scan: If a transvaginal scan is required, you will be asked to empty your bladder. The transvaginal probe, covered with a protective sheath, will be gently inserted into the vagina to capture images of the uterus and ovaries.
  • Reporting: Your results will be sent to your GP within a few business days after your scan.

How do I prepare for my Abdomen and Pelvis Ultrasound?

To ensure we get the best possible images, here are a few things to keep in mind:

  1. Fasting: It is essential that you don’t eat 6 hours before your scan. Only water and medications are allowed during this period.
  2. Optimal Timing: If you’re being examined for endometrial polyps, the best time for this scan is between day 3-5 of your menstrual cycle.
  3. Full Bladder: It’s important to have a full bladder for the examination. Ensure that you drink at least 500ml / pint of water one hour before your scan. Fluids reach your bladder in about one hour, so don’t wait until the last minute to start drinking.
  4. Referral Letter: You will need a referral letter from a GP with an Irish Medical Council (IMC) number dated within 6 months. This can be sent via Healthlink or emailed to info@theultrasoundsuite.ie.
