Female Pelvic Ultrasound
Please note: You will need a referral letter from a GP with an Irish Medical Council (IMC) number dated within 6 months.
Information on Female Pelvic Ultrasounds
This scan includes the uterus, the lining of the uterus, and the ovaries. It helps to confirm or rule out certain conditions affecting these organs.
In addition to the transabdominal approach, we typically use transvaginal scanning, which provides a clearer image than transabdominal scanning. Both approaches together are best practice.
If you have never been sexually active, we will only proceed with the transabdominal approach with a full bladder.
While we strongly recommend transvaginal imaging for clear pictures and diagnosis, you may decline the transvaginal approach, and we will respect your decision.
This scan can be done at any stage of the menstrual cycle, but day 3-5 of your cycle are best for assessing endometrial polyps. If your referral mentions irregular bleeding or possible polyps, try to book your appointment a few days after your period starts. It is okay if you are menstruating when you come in for this scan.
Duration of the Ovary Ultrasound Scan
The examination lasts approximately 30 minutes.
If you have any questions or need further information, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We’re here to help you through every step of the process.
What to Expect During Your Abdominal and Pelvic Ultrasound
- Procedure: Ultrasound gel will be placed on your lower tummy, and an ultrasound probe will be used to scan the organs. Once we are satisfied with these images we will ask you to empty your bladder fully and proceed with the transvaginal approach. Our staff are highly experienced and will do their best to make you feel as comfortable as possible while doing this scan.
- Imaging: The organs of interest will be examined, and multiple images will be taken for analysis by a consultant radiologist.
- Reporting: We aim to deliver the report to your GP within a few business days following your scan.
