Information on Renal and Kidney Ultrasounds
It helps confirm or exclude certain pathologies related to the renal tract. Typically, your doctor will use this scan alongside blood tests and urinalysis for a more accurate diagnosis.
Duration of the ultrasound
The examination lasts approximately 20 minutes.

What to expect from a Renal and Kidney Ultrasound:
- Ultrasound gel will be applied to your abdomen, and an ultrasound probe will be used to scan the organs.
- Multiple images of the organs will be taken for analysis by a consultant radiologist.
- The report will be delivered to your GP within 3 business days after the scan.

- Adrenals (in young children)
- Ureters (if dilated)
- Bladder
- Prostate (in males)

How do I Prepare for a Kidney Ultrasound?
To ensure we get the best possible images, here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Ensure you have a full bladder before the scan. The bladder will be emptied during the procedure to check if it empties properly.
- Referral Letter: You will need a referral letter from a GP with an Irish Medical Council (IMC) number dated within 6 months. This can be sent via Healthlink or emailed to info@theultrasoundsuite.ie.
