This quick, non-invasive procedure helps confirm or exclude certain pathologies related to the thyroid. Often, your doctor will use blood tests in conjunction with this scan for a more accurate diagnosis.

What to expect during your Thyroid Scan?

  • Procedure: Ultrasound gel will be applied to your neck, and the thyroid will be scanned with an ultrasound probe.
  • Imaging: Multiple images will be taken for analysis by a consultant radiologist.

How do I Prepare for My Thyroid Ultrasound?

  1. Clothing: It is best to wear a top with a wide collar to allow easier access to scan your neck. We also recommend removing any necklaces or long earrings prior to your appointment to avoid misplacing them.
  2. Referral Letter: You will need a referral letter from a GP with an Irish Medical Council (IMC) number dated within 6 months. This can be sent via Healthlink or emailed to info@theultrasoundsuite.ie.
