Information on the Detailed Anomaly Scan

This scan is designed to provide you with a comprehensive assessment of your baby’s development, ensuring you have the information and support you need during this important stage of your pregnancy.

You will have the opportunity to view the ultrasound on a large screen positioned for optimal viewing. Throughout the scan, the sonographer will guide you through the examination process and explain the anatomy being assessed. If you wish to learn the baby’s gender, the sonographer can disclose this information during the scan.

What to expect from a Detailed Anomaly Scan:

The scan is performed transabdominally and typically lasts between 45 to 60 minutes. Sometimes a transvaginal scan may be necessary if we can’t see something clearly transabdominally. Examples of needing a transvaginal scan include if your cervix appears to be shortened or if the placenta is possibly covering the cervix. A transvaginal scan is only done when we believe it will provide necessary information for your maternity care.

FAQ's

This anomaly scan is best performed 22 weeks. You can, however, be 20-24 weeks.

A moderately full bladder is helpful to assess your cervix. You can empty your bladder after we have done this so that you are more comfortable for the rest of your scan.

In the unlikely event that we cannot evaluate all of the necessary anatomy that we need to check on the day, we may ask you to return for a follow-up scan, free of charge, to ensure we have provided you with the very best service.

This scan is performed from on top of you tummy. It usually takes 30-45 mins to perform. You will be able to view your ultrasound on a large television at the bottom of the bed. The sonographer will talk you though the anatomy that she is checking as the scan goes along.

The gender of the baby can also be determined at this stage so feel free to ask the sonographer to disclose this information if you wish to know.

Our professional sonographers adhere to strict protocols, but there are limitations and unfortunately, ultrasound cannot diagnose 100% of all congenital abnormalities.

30-50% of babies with Down Syndrome can appear normal on ultrasound.

If any concerns arise, we will promptly refer you to a fetal medicine specialist for further evaluation and support.
