FAQ's

This scan can be performed 16-34 weeks of pregnancy, with optimal results typically seen between 28-32 weeks.

Absolutely! You can find out your baby’s gender at your 3D scan. However, if you prefer for it to be a surprise, we are experts at keeping the gender a secret too.

Ensure adequate fluid intake in the week leading up to your appointment to enhance amniotic fluid levels, potentially improving image quality. It’s helpful to empty your bladder before the scan and consider consuming something sweet to encourage fetal movement.

You’ll lay comfortably on the examination bed as the gel is applied to your abdomen. The ultrasound probe will gently glide over your belly, displaying live images on a large television monitor.

We’ll assess the baby’s presentation, and take standard measurements of the head, abdomen, and femur. Major organs visible at this stage will be examined and we’ll calculate the estimated fetal weight.

Throughout the scan, we’ll monitor fetal movements and breathing, and evaluate amniotic fluid volume, placental location, and umbilical artery resistance.

In the unlikely event that we notice anything out of the norm, we will image your baby further and provide you with a referral to a fetal medicine specialist.

In our experience with twin 3D/4D pregnancy scans, one twin tends to play along, while the other often has its own plans! Due to this delightful unpredictability, we don’t offer this service as it regularly leads to repeat visits, usually resulting in the same situation as the first attempt.

Even if you’ve had a reassuring detailed anomaly scan, the Fetal Medicine Foundation recommends a third-trimester wellbeing scan to monitor your baby’s growth and detect any potential issues that may not have been evident at previous scans.
