Information on the Growth Scan

This wellbeing ultrasound scan serves multiple essential roles.

This second and third trimester scan may provide early indications of conditions like gestational diabetes or preeclampsia, offering valuable insights into your maternal health.

It confirms the baby’s position (breech, transverse, or cephalic) and assesses the placenta’s location and condition.

After 24 weeks, we can estimate fetal weight, evaluate umbilical cord Doppler flow to ensure optimal placental function, measure amniotic fluid volume, and chart standard fetal measurements.

After 28 weeks the sonographer can monitor normal swallowing, breathing, and movement patterns.

Purpose of this Wellbeing Pregnancy Scan:

  • Determine the baby's presentation/lie
  • Locate the placenta and assess its position
  • Measure the amniotic fluid
  • Assess fetal growth by measuring the head, abdomen, and femur bone
  • Estimate current fetal weight (24w +)
  • Identify and measure fetal heart rate
  • Evaluate umbilical cord Doppler flow to ensure placental function (24w +)
  • Determine the baby's gender after 16 weeks upon request

FAQ's

The baby’s presentation and placental location will be confirmed, and measurements of the head, abdomen, and femur bone will be taken.

Essential organs will be examined, and an estimate of the baby’s weight will be provided.

Fetal breathing and movements will be monitored.

The amniotic fluid volume and umbilical artery resistance index will be examined.

The sonographer can also reveal the baby’s gender during this scan if desired. Feel free to ask any questions or share your preferences with the sonographer.

This ultrasound cannot exclude all chromosomal or anatomical abnormalities; however, any concerns detected will be communicated, and you will be referred to a fetal medicine specialist.

Please note that his scan does not replace the 20-week Detailed Anomaly Scan. It does not provide the length of the baby as they are often curled up, and it does not assess the function of the baby’s organs.

Visualising all structures can be challenging due to fetal position and gestational age, but every effort will be made to capture detailed images.
